Through our Child Sponsorship Program, you are matched with a child in the Dominican Republic.

Once you are paired up, you will be able to track their progress through annual reports.

Why sponsor?

When you become a sponsor, you are helping an underprivileged child see a future beyond poverty.

You are giving them a chance to follow a better path in life, one they might not have been able to follow without support.

Your help will pave the way for children to thrive, offering daily nutritious meals, routine medical check-ups, hygiene kits, education, school supplies, bathroom reconstruction in their homes, and the inclusion of their parents in income generation programs.

You may sponsor for as long as you would like. You may also choose to be matched with more than one child.

Currently, there are almost 500 children in the program with multiple needs, waiting to be sponsored.

Biggest needs

Food: sometimes they go days without eating because their families live from day to day and sometimes cannot buy enough.

Health: children live in rural areas where going to a doctor's office is a huge expense, so their families resort to home remedies to treat symptoms that often worsen because they are not treated properly.

Education: the children in the program are very poor, so many times parents do not worry as much about educational issues, but rather put food on the table. Prices of school supplies are very high, which is why many families wait for Good Neighbors' annual deliveries.

Drinking water: Many of these children do not have access to water suitable for human consumption and sanitation.

How being sponsored helped put Otegung on her path to medical school.

"I lost both my parents when I was really young. I remember staying up all night at the hospital when my dad fell sick. Ever since then, I have dreamed of becoming a doctor and helping others."

Meet a former sponsored child

Being sponsored for 6 years changed Otegung's perspective on life.

It allowed her to have a safe home, quality education, and medical care. She grew up in a healthy environment, with her sponsor's continuous dedication.

Thanks to the Good Neighbor's program, she was accepted into the National University of Mongolia to study medicine.

"Life was really tough before I got sponsored", says Otegung. "The biggest benefit for me was the emotional support I got."

"I would not have been able to be here today without my sponsor and the support of Good Neighbors. It is now my turn to help children in need. I want to become a sponsor and make a difference in someone else's life."

Naran was sponsored for 8 years of his life by Jeong-won Min, who works as an obstetrician in Daejeon, South Korea. She now sponsors other children in Nepal.

A bright future in medicine

Sponsor Jung-won Min met Naran Kang Erden when he was 12 years old.

His parents had divorced when he was young. Staying with his mother was not easy, as she was battling an illness.

With growing concerns about living costs, Naran wouldn't have been able to stay in school, if it weren't for the support of Good Neighbors' child sponsorship program.

"I am so proud Naran got into medical school, after going through so much. I believe he will help many people. It is very special to watch the growth of a child you are supporting. One of the most rewarding things in my life is definitely being a child sponsor."

During the pandemic

In 2020, COVID-19 put a strain on the health care system in the Dominican Republic.

Emergency food kits, masks, hand sanitizers, and other hygiene items were provided to our sponsored children's families to offer extra help during those difficult times.

Even though things are now much better, Good Neighbors continues to monitor the situation in the country to make sure families are healthy and not lacking anything urgent.

We thank you so much for your donations to the community, especially during this pandemic.
